The low volume means that all components are only needed in small quantities, and that Zenvo places more than the usual emphasis on ensuring that every single part of the car is as optimised as possible: lightweight, strong, premium.<\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span>3D printing as a manufacturing method was therefore an obvious choice, and Zenvo took part in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/am-hub.dk\/am-sustain\/\">Danish AM Hub\u2019s<\/a><span> DfAM programme (Design for Additive Manufacturing), using a wheel suspension as their design case<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_2 et_pb_row et_flex_row fade-in-up case-row\">\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_3 et_pb_column et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_12_24 et_flex_column_12_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_4 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h3>Lighter and simpler components enable faster and more sustainable cars<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>During the programme, Zenvo\u2019s wheel suspension was optimised in several ways. Previously, for example, the suspension consisted of six components, but in the new design they have been consolidated into a single component. Production of the suspension was also moved from China to Denmark to remove CO2-intensive transport from the equation. In addition, the suspension\u2019s weight was reduced by half a kilogram, which may not sound like much, but corresponds to a weight reduction of almost 30%.   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn a single part we save half a kilo, so if you multiply that by four, because you have four wheels on the car, that is two kilos per car. At the same time, it creates more organic shapes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original wheel suspension was quite bulky and heavy, and in the hypercar world components also need to be pleasing to the eye. The results of the 3D-printed wheel suspension are a performance gain, as it is lighter and stronger. It is a little more expensive, but because it is more aesthetically pleasing, it is a cost we are willing to pay,\u201d says Alberto Solera.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_8 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h3>Facts about the wheel suspension and the redesign process<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_9 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>The new component has been printed in the aluminium alloy AlSi10Mg using the 3D-printing technology Laser Powder Bed Fusion. With the help of topology optimisation, the wheel suspension\u2019s weight has been reduced by 28%-from 2.621 kg to 1.883 kg-and its volume has likewise been reduced by 25%, from 933 cm3 to 700 cm3. In addition, the weight reduction and optimisation of the production process have resulted in savings of more than 60%, equivalent to 2.6 tonnes of CO2.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy designing components that are topology-optimised, less material is used in the production process. As a result of the material reduction, CO2 emissions are reduced. They have gained a better understanding of when it makes sense to use topology optimisation and 3D printing, and are therefore far better prepared for the next time they need to qualify a component for 3D printing. <\/p>\n<p>The 3D-printed wheel suspension has been successfully tested at the factory, and the next step after the project is road testing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will take the wheel suspension, fit it to a car, and run some real-world tests. And if everything goes well, which I am very confident it will, it will go into production,\u201d Alberto Solera concludes. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_5
