AM is short for additive manufacturing and refers to the process of 3D printing using one of the many available materials and technologies.
CM is short for conventional manufacturing and covers processes such as milling and moulding in conventional materials.
Ecoinvent is a trusted global database for environmental data. The CO2e calculator uses standard data from ecoinvent, particularly for conventional manufacturing processes and materials, and, where possible, also as a basis for the materials used in additive manufacturing.
For conventional manufacturing, we largely draw on ecoinvent databases for the global warming potential (GWP) of specific manufacturing processes and specific materials. This means there is less information to enter. For additive manufacturing, global datasets are still lacking; therefore, more first-hand information must be entered regarding emissions from the printing process.
