Biocomposite construction with mutually load-bearing elements

The project explores the combination of 3D printing and annually renewable natural fibres, with a focus on material development, structural analysis, manufacturing methods, and the application of this material-based technology in architectural design.

The study examines the use of 3D-printed filaments reinforced with natural fibres in various architectural contexts. The material’s potential has been tested through a series of demonstrators, each addressing different design challenges.

The structure is made from a lightweight filament with short wood fibres combined with bio-based PLA. As the material was developed specifically for the project, extensive testing was carried out to support the digital simulations and ensure the structure’s structural integrity.

The tests have been crucial in optimising the 3D printing process and documenting the material’s suitability for architectural applications.

The project lays the foundation for future integration of 3D printing based on natural fibre composites in construction and demonstrates the potential for more sustainable material solutions in the building industry.
