Insulating walls with sustainable mineral foam

Airlements is a research project developed by researchers from ETH Zurich in collaboration with FenX AG. The project uses large-scale, robot-based 3D printing to produce monolithic, lightweight, insulating wall systems made from cement-free mineral foam, produced from recycled residual materials.

The innovative material is produced in various densities, optimising the walls’ thermal insulation and energy efficiency and reducing the building’s energy consumption for heating.

The Airlements prototype demonstrates a fast and energy-efficient 3D printing process, in which each hollow wall element of 25 kg cures over approximately one week without the need for energy-intensive curing processes.

The technology is flexible and can be used for non-load-bearing external walls, while also enabling straightforward integration of reinforcement and other strengthening elements.
