HIVE Project

Traditional craftsmanship meets digital innovation

Traditional craftsmanship meets digital innovation

HIVE is a 3D-printed masonry structure developed by a team from the University of Waterloo in Toronto, Canada. The wall was designed by SDI Interior Design for the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario.

The structure consists of 175 unique 3D-printed clay bricks, each shaped with different openings that create a balanced combination of privacy and natural light.

The bricks are assembled in a hexagonal pattern, forming a structurally efficient structure inspired by the construction of a honeycomb.

The development process included extensive testing of materials, design, and production methods. The team combined traditional ceramic materials with advanced geometric design and robot-controlled precision to create the finished structure.

The project demonstrates how traditional ceramic craftsmanship can be combined with modern digital manufacturing, opening up new possibilities in material use and enabling a high degree of geometric complexity in masonry structures.
