REEFCIRCULAR

From waste to new life in the sea

From waste to new life in the sea

ReefCircular works to restore marine ecosystems by transforming shell waste into 3D-printed artificial reefs designed to mimic natural habitats.

The ReefKasse system consists of modular reef tiles that can be easily mounted on harbour walls and other underwater structures. The tiles create an ideal surface for marine organisms to attach and grow, helping to counteract habitat loss in urban coastal areas.

In Hundested, 24 artificial reef tiles have been installed, creating complex habitats for small fish, seaweed, and invertebrates on both quay walls and the seabed.

The installation is simple and efficient-it can be completed in as little as 30 minutes and does not require a dive team. This makes the solution easily accessible and scalable in efforts to strengthen marine biodiversity.

The system is currently being tested in clay, which has a lower CO₂ footprint than concrete. From 2026, the solution is also expected to be available in bio-concrete based on crushed shells, which could make the structures even more sustainable.
