THE EGGSHELL PROJECT

New life for organic waste

New life for organic waste

The Mexican design studio MANUFACTURA has launched The Eggshell Project with the aim of transforming organic waste into sustainable building materials.

As food waste accounts for around one third of global food production, the project seeks to address both environmental and socio-economic challenges by recycling discarded eggshells.

The project focuses on combining eggshells with bio-based binders to produce bioceramic bricks, eliminating the need for traditional firing processes. The material mixture is 3D printed in various geometric forms, resulting in building components that can be used in a wide range of architectural solutions.

The research project led to the development of two main structures: Eggshell Wall, which consists of 105 unique blocks assembled based on their geometry, and Eggshell Column, which consists of 26 interlocking elements that achieve stability through their form.

The eggshells were collected over a period of two months from various restaurants in Mexico City, ensuring a 100% sustainable and circular process.

By combining computer-based design with digital fabrication, the project demonstrates how organic waste can be transformed into valuable building materials and contribute to a more circular construction industry.
