To Grow a Building is a research-based project that explores sustainable architecture using 3D-printed structures made from locally sourced soil and plant seeds. After the printing process, the seeds germinate and grow directly within the structure.
The plants’ roots grow together through the structure, creating a natural reinforcement that increases the structure’s strength and reduces the need for traditional building materials.
The project aims to combine the high precision of digital fabrication with plants’ natural ability to adapt to their surroundings. In doing so, the solution contributes both to more sustainable construction practices and to the preservation of local plant species.
The method was tested by producing a totem-like structure with different geometric shapes and various types of plant seeds. The structure was placed in a garden environment, where the plants were able to grow-and several of them reached a size at which they could be harvested.
